The Crew

Num61
The members of Crew 61 are a very diverse and fun group. Almost all members participate in other extra-curricular activities at their schools, including MANY different team sports (track, XC running, football, basketball, baseball, softball diving), speech, band, drama, choir, FFA, and many others too numerous to be named. Many of the youth males are also involved in scouting, either with local Troop 60 in Dyersville or other local area troops within the Northeast Iowa Council. The Crew tries to consider individual schedules when planning events as much as possible. As it is rarely possible to find dates and times that will work for everyone, we try to find times that will work for most and have the necessary adult leaders available for the activity.
Basic information about our current Crew Members and Advisors (as of 7/2009):
  • Male (65% approx) and female (35% approx)
  • High Schools: Beckman, Cascade, Wahlert, Hempstead and Western Dubuque
  • Colleges: Iowa State University, Loras College, Univ. of Northern Iowa, Kirkwood Comm. College, Mt. Mercy University, Montana State University, Northeast Iowa Community College.
  • Age Range: 14-20.
  • Hometowns: Dyersville, New Vienna, Cascade, Farley, Epworth, Asbury, Dubuque, Worthington, Peosta, Holy Cross and Bernard
The Crew will do everything possible to make new Crew members feel welcome. In typically a few short meetings or after as little as little as one single activity, new members will typically find themselves with an entire group of new friends. Our meetings and events are often rather informal and more of a discussion time for planning. Sometimes very effective. Sometimes less. We like to leave some time for the Crew to socialize and have some fun. It is not unusual to meet up at the Dyersville Dairy Queen or somewhere else after a crew meeting... or just to make it simple we will sometimes just schedule a meeting at the DQ.
Activities are planned according to skill and abilities. The goal of the Crew 61 and the Venturing program is to offer positive experiences. The Crew members, advisors, and other adults that may be with on an activity will encourage each other to try an activity, but you will never be required. Usually after trying something once with adequate instruction, any fears or apprehension quickly subside and the individual will have a great experience.
The adult Advisor Corp is also a diverse and fun group. Crew 61 prides itself on having an active and very knowledgeable group of advisors. Their skills in leadership, scouting, climbing, skiing, backpacking, camping, cooking, and planning fantastic activities is superb. The advisors meet informally throughout the year to help plan activities and keep the operations of the crew on track and within the guidelines established by the National Venturing Committee and the Boy Scouts of America.
